CT Cardiac Angiogram Test

CT Cardiac Angiogram Test

A CT cardiac angiogram, also known as a CT angiography of the heart, is an imaging test that looks into the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Although CT coronary angiography examines the heart for a variety of conditions, it is most commonly used to look for any narrowed arteries or blockages in the heart (coronary artery disease).

This test is used to detect narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries caused by a build-up of fat (cholesterol) and calcium in the arteries.

Fluid accumulation around the heart and damage or injury to the heart valves

Aneurysm (bulge) in the aorta. A CT angiogram can determine whether a blood vessel is blocked, where the blockage is located, and how large it is. It also indicates whether there is a bulge (aneurysm) or a build-up of fatty material (plaque) in the blood vessels of the heart.

This procedure has several advantages.

  • Non-invasive method
  • Reduced risk of complications
  • Outpatient treatment is available at a lower cost to the patient.
  • It takes less time.

The person being examined is made to lie on a table that passes through a doughnut-shaped opening in the scanner during a CT coronary angiogram. A special dye (known as contrast material) is injected into an arm vein (IV). The individual is asked to hold their breath, and the table is moved into the scanner.

The heart and coronary arteries are then photographed in layers/slices in rapid succession. It is a painless procedure that takes about 10 minutes.

Diabetics are asked to stop taking Metformin on the day of the CT scan and for the next 24 hours.

It is recommended that you fast for 4 hours before the test.

The individual is asked to change into a loose gown prior to the test.

There will be no caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, or other stimulants. 12 hours before the test.

The best non-invasive way to evaluate the heart arteries is with CT angiography. This test is generally considered if you have symptoms of coronary artery disease but no prior history of the disease. It is also the best way to determine the health of the heart if the results of a stress test are unclear.
