Parotid tumours are abnormal cell growths (tumours) that develop in the parotid glands. The parotid glands are two salivary glands located on each side of the face just in front of the ears. Salivary glands make saliva to help with chewing and digestion.

To determine the size of your tumour, your doctor may recommend imaging tests of your parotid gland. If your parotid tumour is cancerous, you may need to have tests to see if the cancer has spread.
This test requires no special preparation. You may only need to remove your clothes and put on a light hospital gown. Simply avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the scan test. Also, metal objects that could impede the test may be requested to be removed. Belts, jewellery, glasses, and other similar items may be requested to be removed from your body. After the machine takes an x-ray image, the couch will move slightly and then take more images. The patient will be asked to remain still in order to obtain accurate results. After the machine has taken the images, you will be slowly guided out of the machine using the examination table. The images will be signed and sealed before being sent to the laboratory.
