Obstetric Ultrasound Scan Test

Obstetric Ultrasound Scan Test

Obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of a baby (embryo or foetus) within a pregnant woman's uterus and ovaries. It does not employ ionising radiation, has no known adverse effects, and is the preferred method for monitoring pregnant women and their unborn children. This exam may include a Doppler ultrasound study, which evaluates blood flow in the umbilical cord, foetus, or placenta.

Doctors recommend this Obstetric Scan Pregnancy Test to pregnant women for the following purposes:

Establish the presence of a living embryo/fetus
• Estimate the age of the pregnancy
• Diagnose congenital abnormalities of the fetus
• Evaluate the position of the fetus

Most ultrasound exams will have you lying face-up on an exam table that can be tilted or moved. Patients may turn to either side to improve image quality.

The radiologist (a doctor who specialises in supervising and interpreting radiology exams) or sonographer will place you on the exam table. They will apply a water-based gel to the area of the body that is being examined. The gel will aid the transducer in making firm contact with the body. It also removes air pockets between the transducer and the skin, which can prevent sound waves from entering your body. The sonographer positions the transducer on the body and moves it back and forth over the area of interest until the desired images are captured.

It has no adverse effects on either the mother or the baby, making it a safe procedure to undergo.

The majority of ultrasound exams are painless, quick, and well tolerated.

During an obstetrical ultrasound, however, the sonographer may have to press more firmly to get closer to the embryo or foetus in order to better visualise the structures. Any discomfort is usually minor and transient.

You may hear pulse-like sounds that change in pitch as the doctor monitors and measures

There may be some discomfort as the transducer is inserted into the vagina during transvaginal scanning.

This ultrasound examination takes about 30 minutes to complete.

When the exam is finished, the technologist may ask you to dress and wait while the ultrasound images are reviewed.

You should be able to resume your normal activities immediately following an ultrasound exam.
