Transvaginal ultrasound examines a woman's uterus, ovaries, tubes, cervix, and pelvic area.

Transvaginal refers to crossing or passing through the vagina. During the test, the ultrasound probe will be inserted into the vagina.

You will be lying on your back on a table, knees bent. Stirrups can be used to keep your feet in place.

A probe will be inserted into the vagina by the ultrasound technician or doctor. It may be slightly uncomfortable, but it will not harm you. A condom and gel are wrapped around the probe.

  1. The probe sends out sound waves and records their reflections off body structures. An image of the body part is created by the ultrasound machine.
  2. The ultrasound machine displays the image. The image is often visible to the patient in many offices.
  3. To see the pelvic organs, the provider will gently move the probe around the area.

In some cases, a special transvaginal ultrasound technique known as saline infusion sonography (SIS) may be required to see the uterus more clearly.

This test can be done if you have problems like unusual vaginal bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic pain, or some types of infertility.

An irregular TVS test can occasionally be symptomatic of uterine cancer, endometriosis, infections, and extrauterine pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy).

There are no known bad effects of TVS on humans. In addition, this technique does not expose patients to radiation, unlike typical X-rays.
