Brucellosis

Brucellosis, also known as Malta fever, undulant fever, or Mediterranean fever, is a bacterial infection caused by the genus Brucella. The infection can affect both humans and animals, and it is transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected animals or the consumption of contaminated animal products, such as unpasteurized milk or cheese.

Brucellosis can manifest in a range of symptoms, which may vary in severity and duration. Common symptoms may include fever, chills, sweats, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headache, and loss of appetite. Other possible symptoms may include swollen lymph nodes, abdominal pain, weight loss, and in some cases, symptoms related to the involvement of specific organs such as the liver, spleen, or reproductive organs.

Diagnosis of brucellosis is typically based on clinical symptoms, along with laboratory testing. This may include blood tests to detect antibodies against Brucella, as well as blood cultures to isolate and identify the bacteria. Imaging studies, such as X-rays or ultrasound, may be done to evaluate for complications or involvement of specific organs.
