Transient Ischemic attack (TIA) is a long lasting stroke. A stroke is typically short term but TIA is long lasting. You might feel the same symptoms as you might get in a stroke. A TIA might occur when a blood clot hampers the blood flow to your brain for a brief period of time. The attack can last for a few seconds to upto 24 hours.

MRI TIA protocol is a sequence of MRI scans or a combined study that reveal improved diagnosis.

Purpose

A TIA MRI protocol is done when the patients have acute infarction which can  be visualised in MRI. Associations were found with neurological symptoms, speech dysfunction and weakness.

MRI TIA Protocol Parameters

Given below are the parameters of TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) protocol with its description.

Test Parameters Description
Screening of Brain The screening of Brain in this protocol is considered to be non-contrast MRI comprising of a group of the basic MRI sequences in a useful approach when the imaging of brain is considered (e.g. severe headache). The protocol would be designed to further obtain a general overview of the brain.
DWI The DWI is known to have important advantages and mostly do not require any contrast medium. It is a quick technique and would be able to provide any qualitative and the quantitative information for the tumor assessment
MRA Head and Neck It can provide any powerful noninvasive imaging of cervical and the intracranial vessels. This allows for the detection and the diagnosis of any vascular anomalies. MRA includes the supplements, using the same examination, with analysis by of the head and neck by MRI of cerebral parenchyma.

Procedure

The patient is asked to lie on a scan table which will slide into the donut shaped scanner. For a clear and precise image production, the patient needs to lie perfectly stable during the test. The test might take around an hour. While scanning, the machine produces loud clicking and popping noise, the patients are given headphones or earplugs with a white noise playing in ut to cancel this noise. Once the scan is done, the table will slide out of the scanner.

Required Documents

  • A valid verification proof
  • Relevant past medical documents
  • Doctor's prescription

How to Prepare for TIA MRI Protocol?

There are usually no restrictions to having a TIA MRI protocol, you can eat and drink or take your ongoing medications as usual unless otherwise guided. If you are having a contrast based study you might have to not eat 4-5 hours before the test.

MRI uses strong magnets for its operation. Thisnbis why it is highly necessary to remove all of the metal objects before the scan such as pen, jewellery, hairpins, zippers, earrings, eyeglasses or any removable dental prosthesis.

If you have certain implanted devices or conditions you should inform beforehand only which might include.

  • If you have a Cardiac pacemaker, Cardiac defibrillator or artificial heart valve
  • Any implant such as Ear implant (cochlear implant)
  • If for a  brain aneurysm a surgical clip was used.
  • Implanted medicine infusion ports
  • If you have Pins, screws, plates, stents or surgical staples or a metallic rod in leg or arm which is usually placed after a severe fracture
  • If you have implanted nerve stimulator
  • If you are claustrophobic

After care

You can resume your normal daily activities after the TIA MRI protocol. If you were given a medication/sedative you might need someone to drive you home as you might feel dizzy for a few hours. If you were given a contrast you might need to stayback for a few hours to monitor your vitals.

Cost of MRI TIA Protocol

The test can cost around INR 10000 to INR 65000 depending upon the diagnostic centre’s reputation and the technology it uses.

FAQ

The MRI in MRI TIA is the magnetic resonance imaging and the TIA in the MRI TIA stands for Transient ischemic attack.

The magnetic resonance imaging technique for transient ischemic attack is an MRI scan sequence that collects information about the organs using strong magnets and a radiowaves system.

The TIA MRI protocol is done to evaluate the symptoms of neurological diseases, and dysfunctions of speech that might be the cause of acute infarction.

TIA is a transient ischemic attack that is similar to a stroke but it is not as long-lasting as a stroke. When the blood supply to the brain is cut off for a few seconds presenting associated symptoms, you are known to be having a transient ischemic attack.

The TIA has symptoms including

  • Confusion
  • Difficulty in maintaining posture
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea
  • Problem maintaining coordination and balance
  • Sudden changes in vision (blurred vision or double vision)

Yes, the MRI TIA Protocol is completely safe. Talking about the hazards that it puts, the MRI TIA protocol working principle doesn't include anything that might cause side effects to you.

The MRI TIA protocol is an accurate and safe diagnostic technique. It has a sensitivity of 20% in detecting Acute Ischemic Lesions and a specificity of 98%. The diagnostic technique can precisely determine and affirm the diagnosis.

The MRI TIA protocol does not cause any pain or side effects during the procedure. The process is a non-invasive technique. Additionally, it is safe in terms of radiation exposure as it doesn't operate on the radiation principle.
