Bubonic Plague

Bubonic plague, also known as the Black Death, is a severe and highly infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected flea, usually from an infected rodent, such as a rat. Bubonic plague is characterized by the sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches, followed by the appearance of painful, swollen lymph nodes, known as buboes, which are often located in the groin, armpit, or neck.

In addition to the buboes, other symptoms of bubonic plague may include fatigue, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and sometimes the development of skin lesions or necrosis at the site of the flea bite. Bubonic plague can progress rapidly and may result in serious complications, such as septicemia (infection in the blood) or septic shock if left untreated.

Diagnosis of bubonic plague is typically based on clinical symptoms, along with laboratory testing. This may include blood tests to detect the presence of Yersinia pestis, as well as imaging studies, such as X-rays or ultrasound, to evaluate for complications or involvement of specific organs.
