The Urinary tract is responsible for the production and storage of urine. As previously known, urine is a waste product of the body.

Path followed before elimination of Urine:  the Urine is made ready in the kidneys and afterwards it moves down the ureter into the bladder. The bladder then stores until the urine is emptied post urination through urethra, it is a tube that further connects bladder to the skin. In males: The opening of urethra is at the end of penis in females: The opening of urethra is above the vaginal opening in a female.

Causes of Urinary Tract Infection

There are many bacteria around the vagina, rectum and also on the skin. A bacterium gets into the urine from either the urethra and then travels into the bladder. At times it also travels until the kidney.

Note: Some people are more prone to UTIs than others. Example, Women bear shorter urethras than men, thus, have frequent Urinary Tract Infection.

According to statistics, around 20% and 40% of women who had an UTI before will have another infection soon. However, men are viewed less susceptible to get a UTI

There are a few factors that can increase the chances of getting the Urinary Tract Infection. These are as follows:

Some women can be genetically predisposed to the frequency of UTIs. They anatomically have urinary tracts that predispose bacteria to adhere to the lining of the urinary tract

It may be understood that the frequency sexual intercourse and having multiple partners can also affect UTIs frequency

Birth Control

Females using diaphragms have a higher risk of developing UTIs.

Also, using condoms along with the spermicidal foam is can be linked to higher risk of UTIs in women.

Abnormal Anatomy

Some structural abnormalities, Example outpouchings also called diverticula, this can harbor the bacteria in either the bladder or the urethra.

Immune System

Debilitating conditions like diabetes also put patients at higher risk for developing UTIs

Prevention of UTI

  1. Regular health check-ups with the doctor
  2. Consuming plenty of fluids (2 L / day) i.e. increased water intake to remain hydrated.
  3. Make sure to not hold the urine for too long and empty your bladder at regular intervals
  4. Cranberry juice and tablets help prevent UTIs.

Diagnosis: Types of UTI Tests
